I’ve been hitting the 12 points of the scout law to kick off Thursday thoughts because it’s a good list by which to live a life, for the most part. This week is point 4, a scout is friendly.
This is a tough one to write about because it’s so obvious. Y’know, ya catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. The thing is, sometimes it’s difficult to do. You’re having a bad day and the kid comes up and starts asking some annoying and trivial questions you don’t want to deal with right now. You snap at somebody because you’re mad at somebody else. You had a terrible time at work and you bring the anger home. You know the situations of which I speak.
Interestingly enough, studies indicate that smiling actually makes you feel better. (Sorry for the ads you have to put up with to see the article.)
I’m also a strong believer in karma. Treating people well indeed pays dividends, because nobody wants to do a favor for a jerk. Unfortunately, people aren’t always in a good mood. There have been instances where I’ve been in a sour mood and somebody was friendly to me, and it lifted my spirits. Why wouldn’t I want to do that for somebody else?
