Tomorrow I will attend the Southwest Area Killifish Event. It marks my first tropical fish convention. This is the big regional killifish convention that features egg-laying toothcarp fish. They are cousins to livebearing toothcarps such as mollies, swordtails, guppies, and of course Endler’s Livebearers.
This year’s event is also featuring livebearers so there should be a good mix of people and fish. They run the convention a bit different than your typical science fiction convention. I’ll give a report on that after it’s all over, but there is one pretty cool difference. The convention is free to attend, and the cost is offset by raffles and auction of fish and aquarium supplies donated to the event.
I will be donating a half dozen unsexed Endler fry, as well as 3 sexed juveniles. Since mine are purebred fish, I hope they fetch a decent price for the convention. For my bidding, I would like to bring home some hardware for the tanks I will be setting up soon. I’d like to bid on a bunch of fish but I don’t really have all that much tank space available.
I would like to leave there with at least one species of killifish. I already have a single clown killie and could house several in a species tank if I can find any more.
Another difference is that this convention doesn’t appear to have panels. There are three guest speakers scheduled throughout the day. Between those speakers are the silent auction and the live auctions.
I do expect to be tweeting from the con.
If anybody nearby wants to attend, it’s from noon until the auctions are done after 9:00 sometime (maybe late) at this location:
Ramada Plaza Hotel Phoenix at Metro Center
12027 North 28th Drive
Cactus Road/I-17 Exit 209

There isn’t really a website for it.
