Back in 2005, when I attended Orson Scott Card’s Literary Boot Camp, a woman named Rachel Drydan applied to go. Instead of approving her attendance, Orson Scott Card bought her application story for Intergalactic Medicine Show under the theory that he couldn’t teach her anything.
Five years and a few odd months later, after being virtual friends with Rachel for so long, I finally met her. I was sitting in the audience of a panel yesterday, just prior to leaving the hotel for the day. As I came out, Dani Kollin introduced me to this woman who looked a bit familiar, but I couldn’t place the face. It turned out to be Rachel, who I had no idea was in town.
We spent about 20 minutes delaying what we both had intended to do just talking. So, I’m looking forward to getting back to the con this afternoon. I’ll chat with her some more, I sit on a panel with Stephen R Donaldson, and I have a reading.
