It’s been a busy past couple of days. Friday I got sworn in as an official Census worker, and tuesday I start my 4 days of training as an enumerator. Pay is okay. If I work 20 hours in one week, I will earn around what I make teaching two community college classes. Excitement to follow, no doubt. I’m not sure how much of that experience I’ll be able to blog.

Over the past week or so, I’ve become interested in cocktails and learning what goes into which one. I’ve always like mixed drinks but usually settle for beer when I go out, just to keep costs down. I’ve been experimenting with different mixes depending upon what I have on hand.
I’m fairly well stocked now, though I haven’t any whiskey or tequila. I started out with a greyhound, which is basically grapefruit juice and gin. I also tried a firefly, which is a greyhound with a teaspoon of grenadine poured down the middle. Well, we have a grapefruit tree and they are getting rather ripe.
The other day I built a black Russian, Kahlua and vodka. It’s a bit strong for my taste, but not bad. Friday I built a variation on Between the Sheets. It’s brandy, white rum and curacao. I used Malibu in place of the white rum, and triple sec instead of curacao. I ended up with something light orange instead of light blue.
Saturday I didn’t mix or drink anything.
Today, I cracked open a bottle of Irish cream so I could try some of those recipes. I made the mistake of buying a 750 ml bottle, and now I’m worried it will go bad before I finish the bottle, even refrigerated. This afternoon I created a mudslide (Kahlua, Irish cream and vodka). I followed up with some Irish cream on the rocks this evening.
I’ve pretty much decided I don’t want all that much Irish cream, so once I finish this bottle, I’ll be looking for something much smaller, preferably airplane bottle sized. The stuff is thick and heavy. I don’t use much dairy product in the first place, so the 750 ml bottle was something of a mistake for me. I don’t really care much for it.
